Safety Tips for Riding a Scooter in Your Neighborhood

Before you decide to take off on your scooter in your neighborhood you should go through these few steps to being safe. The best thing you can do is go through a check list to be sure you are fully ready and prepared for your journey.

The first step is to always use proper safety equipment. The helmet is the most important piece of safety gear you can own. I recommend wearing one even if the law does not require it in you area, never ride without one. A rider that is not wearing their helmet is forty percent more likely to suffer a fatal head injury, if in an accident compared to a helmeted rider.

The next step is to make sure you are trained as well as possible. Even if you are not required to get a license to ride a scooter you will want to get a lot of practice. The best way to do this is to be sure to practice in all different types of weather and road conditions so that you are prepared for it all. It is recommended for both kids and adults to have training and experience before attempting to ride out in full on traffic. If parents are sure to give their kids the proper training a scooter can be a fun experience instead of causing injury.

Next you will want to make sure to watch out for debris and be careful of certain road conditions. Being on a scooter you will find that they can slide easily and suddenly even from loose gravel on the road. You will want to always be looking out for this and avoiding it as much as possible. You must choose your roads you travel on carefully. You do not want to be driving on a road with heavy, fast moving traffic. This can be dangerous for a small vehicle like a scooter.

Always be alert for other vehicles following you too closely. Scooter can stop much quicker than a car can so be sure you have enough room. If a car is following too close to you and you decide to stop you could get run over and be seriously injured. You will want to use your turn signal way ahead of time to let them know you are turning and give them enough time to stop. You will want to make yourself as visible as possible. In most cases when there is and accident the car drivers excuse is that they did not see the scooter or bike rider. Always have your light on and always use your turn signals. The best way is to assume you are invisible to other drivers and this will help keep you safe.

Know and obey the safety rules of the road. In order to be safe you must be alert at all times while on your scooter. When following the rules of the road this means not making unnecessary or risky moves in traffic. This can cause another vehicle to hit you and cause you serious injuries. The last tip is to always be a defensive driver. Defensive driving is the key to safety. You must always be alert and expect the unexpected. You must be aware of other vehicles as well as pedestrians. Be prepared for others to make mistakes driving, because most people do, so if you are watching it will not effect you. Be sure to watch for bicyclists, joggers, animals as well as slippery roads from bad weather.
Be prepared, be safe, enjoy!
