My New Rockboard Scooter!

Today was CRAZY! It was my first day with my new orange Rockboard and I had a blast. I zoomed all around the neighborhood and a bunch of people stopped me to ask about my cool new scooter. As I was talking to Mr. Bradbury, I saw Oliver (Mrs. Merriweather’s new puppy) running down the sidewalk. I told Mr. Bradbury sorry but I had to go, and I took off after the pup. Luckily, my new Rockboard Scooter is really fast, because I could never have caught Oliver if I were on a kick scooter. I caught up to Oliver, scooped him up, and took him back to Mrs. Merriweather. She was so excited to see him that she invited me in for a snack. After fueling up on carrots and celery, I thanked Mrs. Merriweather and jumped back on my Rockboard.

I was heading to my friend Aiden’s house to see if he wanted to ride my new Rockboard when I came across Old Man Thompson. I stopped to ask about Ella, his cat (she just had kittens) and his hat started to blow away. Thankfully I was there with my Rockboard, because it flew all the way down the block. I rescued the hat and returned it, then went on to Aiden’s.

Aiden was out in his driveway, scooting around on his kick scooter. He loves his scooter, but I knew he would like to ride the Rockboard. He was really excited to see something so different. At first, he was a little worried about riding it because it looks kind of complicated, but he jumped on and took off! We took turns riding around the block and we even timed each other to see how fast we could get all the way around. A few other kids noticed what we were doing and asked if they could try it out. Jackson Keller and I tied for the fastest time. Aiden asked me for ideas on how to make some money to buy his own and the rest of the kids decided they would start saving, too.

After leaving Aiden’s, I went back home for supper. I know my dad doesn’t like big toys taking up a lot of space, so I folded up my Rockboard to put it under my bed. Mom and dad were both happy that it folds up really small so I can bring it inside and keep it out of the way.

Riley said she really wanted to ride my cool new scooter, but she is too little. Hopefully mom and dad will get her a Rockboard Mini for her birthday because it is perfect for her size.

I’ve Saved Enough Money!

I finally have the money to buy the Rockboard Scooter! I’ve done extra chores for my mom, dad, and even the neighbors. Finding ways to earn money has actually been pretty fun.

I first saw the Rockboard Scooter a few weeks ago online. I asked my mom and dad if I could get it and they told me I would have to save my money. They said that if I saved enough money to buy the scooter, they would pay for my helmet and safety pads.

I’ve done a lot of extra chores around the house lately, like going up to the roof to collect vegetables from mom’s garden. I throw away anything rotten and pick only the ripe ones. I bring them in and help her wash them.  I also water all the plants, even the houseplants. I’ve also been helping Mrs. Merriweather who lives in our building. She needed her trash taken out a couple of times and I run the vacuum for her every Tuesday.

My dad and I have been making birdhouses from recycled juice containers. I asked the kids in my class to bring in their old juice jugs and my dad helps me make them into birdhouses that I sell in our building. He even showed me how to make his famous sun tea! Since my class brought in their recycled juice jugs, I took the money I made from the sun tea into class for new art supplies.

Mom is picking Riley and I up from school tomorrow.  I’m really excited because we are going straight to the toy store. Usually we have to go to Riley’s drum lesson or to my dad’s office or the grocery, ugh. But tomorrow we’re going to pick up my Rockboard Scooter!

I counted the money this morning and I even have an extra $1.50 that Mrs. Merriweather gave me “for being a good boy”.

Orange RockboardI picked out a place to go see the Rockboard in person. We have a toy store down the street from us called Mass Ave Toys.  My little sister Riley and I love it there.  They have all kinds of great toys. Since I have the money, Mom said she would take me there tomorrow after school. Man, I really hope they have an orange scooter. Orange is my favorite color.

Commuting to Work on a Rockboard Scooter

Have you thought about alternative modes of transportation to and from your workplace every day? If so, you’re definitely not alone. Many people are tired and weary of the daily commute, trying to beat the traffic rush but inevitably getting stuck in a bumper-to-bumper gridlock every morning on the way to work, and then on the way home again at the end of the workday.

Or maybe traffic congestion isn’t an issue for you; however, you’re an environmentally conscious person who is starting to think about all that energy your vehicle is using just so you can get to and from work every day. Even if you’re not too concerned about the environment, you might be concerned about money; stop for a minute and think about how much money you need to spend in gas and in parking, every day, just to use your car, van, or truck for work. You could be saving a significant amount of money through alternative methods of transportation. Continue reading

Teaching a Child to Ride a Scooter

When your child wants to learn out to ride a scooter, there are a few simple steps to follow. The first thing to look at is safety. You must always to be sure and have all the proper safety equipment available to you. The most important thing to wear is a helmet. This will protect your child from any possible head injuries if they should fall. The elbow and knee pads are also a good idea, in order to keep them from getting scraped up. For the first few times, at least while they are learning to ride, I would suggest they wear some long pants or jeans to cover up their legs. When first learning to ride a scooter they may have a few falls and this will give a little extra protection.

You will want to start off somewhere open and in an area that has fairly soft ground, this makes it a little less discouraging if your child does have a few spills. When they are ready to begin you must teach them exactly how a scooter works. This means demonstrating how, if dealing with a self propelled scooter, they must put both feet on the scooter. The easiest way to teach them to ride is to figure out the best way to keep their selves balanced on a scooter they stand both feet on. These scooters are self propelled and require both feet on the scooter to ride and glide forward. Once they figure out the balance issue these scooters are a whole lot of fun and can be much faster than a normal kick scooter. These types of scooters can go as fast as you want them too, with a little more ease than a typical scooter, while still giving you the exercise and excitement you want.

The most important step to riding a scooter is to find balance. Some children will feel confident enough to try on their own, while some may need a little extra help to learn. The most important thing you can do at this point is to be there for them if they should need the extra help. This may take some time to learn, but with a little practice and a lot of patience, they will succeed and feel confident to balance his or her self. The next step after balance is to have your child practice weaving back and forth as well as turning in circles. By being able to turn and weave they will be able to get around others and avoid any objects that may be in their path. When your child has mastered turns and weaving they may even want to try some tricks or even going up or down hills. Always be sure they are supervised and that whatever they are trying is safe. This will give them a little more confidence and make them feel a little less scared when going in a public place.

As you can see riding a scooter can be fun and exciting, as well as safe for your child if they are taught all the necessary skills before going out on their own. You and your child should always do a safety check before going out each time on their scooter. This will ensure a safe journey every time they venture out on their scooter.

Scooters vs Skateboards

The first thing someone is looking for in an outdoor vehicle is safety. The scooter wins by a long shot in this category just for the simple fact that you have handles to hold onto. With a skateboard you are very dependent on your own balance for safety. While you can have the same protecting gear with a skateboard that you can with a scooter, the simple fact is having handle bars makes it a scooter a whole lot safer. When a young child is trying to learn to ride a scooter they have a much easier time than a skateboard for the simple fact of something to help them feel a sense of security. For the first time rider this makes learning a little easier and faster as well.

You will not have to worry about being late to class because your next class is so far away. Most people will drive to school in a car so you will find a parking space much easier with a scooter. A scooter is a great way of saving the environment which is always a plus. You will find it much cheaper on gas as well if not no gas if you are lucky enough to have an electric scooter.
